What is the Endocannabinoid System - Mother Nature's Trading Company ®

What is the Endocannabinoid System?

The human body is made up of dozens of complex systems that work together to keep us well. We’re all taught about the nervous, respiratory, and digestive systems in school, but you’d be surprised to know that there’s another system that’s even more influential when it comes to our wellbeing, and that’s the endocannabinoid system.

What is it?

The endocannabinoid system (ENS) is a complex cell-signaling system that was discovered in the 1990s when researchers were investigating the effects of THC on the human body. The system helps regulate homeostasis, and is signaled when your body needs help stabilizing itself to return to its ideal internal environment. Research has found that it plays a role in the regulating of several functions, including:

  • appetite and digestion
  • metabolism
  • chronic pain
  • inflammation and other immune system responses
  • mood
  • learning and memory
  • motor control
  • sleep
  • cardiovascular system function
  • muscle formation
  • bone remodeling and growth
  • liver function
  • reproductive system function
  • stress
  • skin and nerve function

How does it work?

The ENS is made up of 3 major components; endocannabinoids, receptors, and enzymes.

  • Cannabinoid receptors are found on the surface of cells.
  • Endocannabinoids are small molecules that activate cannabinoid receptors.
  • Enzymes break down endocannabinoids after they’re used

Cannabinoid receptors sit on the surface of cells and “listen” to conditions outside the cell. When conditions within the body are changing, they transmit information to the inside of the cell, which starts the appropriate cellular response. Endocannabinoids are molecules that bind to and activate your cannabinoid receptors the same way plant cannabinoids do. Your body naturally produces them, even if you never use a hemp-derived product. The third piece of the ENS system are the enzymes, which quickly destroy endocannabinoids after they’ve been used.

How does CBD interact with the ECS?

Experts aren’t entirely sure how cannabidiol (CBD) interacts with the ECS, but they believe it prevents endocannabinoids from being broken down. This allows them to have more of a positive effect on your body, and is supported by research that suggests regular dosing of CBD can help with pain, nausea, and other symptoms associated with multiple conditions.

Why Should You Use CBD?

Our bodies contain an entire network of receptors that interact exclusively with cannabinoids such as cannabidiol, and by feeding these receptors, we can better heal, function, and thrive on a daily basis. CBD is a safe, psychoactive-free alternative to traditional THC products that have proven health benefits. While there’s still more research to be done, there is plenty that suggests CBD works with our ENS to promote overall well being, with absolutely zero side effects.
